In 2015 I was asked to shape Kelly a board for the first time. I knew immediately what I wanted to make him. I saw it all in my head immediately; from the bottom contour to the tail template. The way the volume would distribute through the width, the whole shape… It might actually be the most intuitive design I’ve ever done, probably because I’ve spent so many years both watching Kelly surf, and shaping boards. As crazy as it sounds I was certain it would work for him. Totally certain. The odd thing is, after sending him the board in 2015, I never heard from Kelly about how the board went, and I sort of just moved on to other stuff. Then one afternoon in 2017 I got this stream of text messages one day about how Kelly was blowing up at Trestles on my board. It totally caught me off guard. Just text messages and phone calls flying in from everyone. I sorted through everyone’s messages and learned that Kelly’s good friend from Florida who was in town at the time had grabbed the board from Kelly’s shed where it had sat un-surfed for two years. He surfed it and then told Kelly that Kelly would love it based on having known Kelly his whole life, and having a good idea about what boards he likes and doesn’t like, based on all the times the two of them had swapped boards before. Anyway, thankfully Kelly took his friends advice and loved the board from the first turn. Kelly actually said he knew the FRK was a keeper before he’d even completed his first wave on it. Two weeks later he took it to J Bay and did what a lot of people called his best surfing of the year. Since that contest, he’s ridden the FRK everywhere in videos and at key events like the Founders Cup, J Bay again in 2018, and the Surf Ranch Pro. He’s also surfed it all around the North Shore this Winter. Actually the FRKs he’s been riding this Winter have been straight out of Firewire’s factory, and I’m stoked we were able to so smoothly transition the custom FRKs I’ve been making him since 17’ into the final version from Firewire’s factory that will be at surf shops everywhere. I couldn’t help but be enamored with the relentless run of boards he was building with Twinzer setups. Intrigued again, I reached out to Stu and expressed interest in developing one of my own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to track down Will Jobson—the man universally acknowledged as the inventor of the Twinzer concept—to use his exact specs and officially license it from him. I wanted to do it right, with authenticity. Give credit to the inventor and toss him some money for his idea.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith Stu and others trying to help, we attempted to reach Will, but never got a response. Once again, I lost interest and moved on.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the five years since, we’ve seen a lot of creative smaller-scale builders developing Twinzer boards. Beautiful backyard and boutique boards popping up all over IG. Even some excellent surfing being done on them. The development of the Twinzer concept has been building back up from the underground. Once again, my curiosity was piqued.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhy the RNF ’96?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhere to start? With the safest bet—the most tried, tested, and proven alternative design in our line:\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ethe RNF ’96\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith 30 years of R\u0026amp;D under our belt (and thousands made), adding an alternative fin setup to the ’96 seemed fun and exciting. By pairing the Twinzer+ canard setup with our most reproduced, well-ridden, and beloved model, we could eliminate hesitance or apprehension. Surfers already know the board works.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy leaving the overall shape\/design of the ’96 unchanged, it gave us a transparent base to feel the Twinzer+ concept underfoot, without wondering if the shape itself was unfamiliar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUsing decades-old fin placements, published by Jobson himself, we began building the first RNF TWINZER ‘96er—subtly adjusting shape along the way:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eAdded just a touch more width to the hip of the tail to hold the added outside canard fins, balanced by widening the nose at the same point. Nose and tail now maintain the same width at 12” from tips.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eDeepened the double concave through the tail and made slight updates to the tail and overall foil of the deck-line.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTaking a page from Rusty’s C5 playbook, we added a third mini-box in the rear stabilizer position, offering a myriad of fin setups. Many Twinzer shapers have used channels in the tail to help with hold in radical surf. We went another way. That winter, ’96\/’97, Cory and Andy staked their claim at a small Hawaiian beach house at Log Cabins and proceeded to rip the place apart. In between the well-documented 5’5” x 19 1\/4” fish sessions, the boys were ravaging the relative closeout out front, on radical, minimalistic, needle-nose, rockered-out, flip-tip Mayhems, with aplomb.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMultiple magazine ads, editorial shots, posters, and video sections were recorded. Andy even garnered a SURFER cover, which captured Cory carefully watching Andy from behind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe boards were still a bit rough—hand-shaped by a kid in his mid-20s, still developing techniques and understanding of design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe were not yet crushing the contest scene… that’s for sure. But with powerful surf out front providing plenty of push, they made those rudimentary Mayhems look like magic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs the boys began to tour and attempt to tackle the world, Cory was our full-ride guy, with a complete quiver of …Lost\/Mayhems. A couple built for Andy made it into his bag and off to Australia as well. One 6’0” 18 5\/8” 2 5\/16” minimalist slipper in particular, with glassed-on Aercore fins and purple POSCA paint pen art by Sean Spoto.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMore posters, ads, and editorials followed—but not contest results. The board made it back to the USA and somehow into the hands of young SURFING Magazine editor Skip Snead, who held onto it for 25 years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFast forward to summer of 2023. Skip graciously returns the board to us in exchange for a multiple-years supply of fresh boards.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYoung Griffin Colapinto comes to the shop and feels the board out: “Man, it feels amazing. I’d love to give this thing a whirl.” Ok… one session—but not without being documented! Down to Lowers we go.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGriff has one memorable session on the board—flowing and linking effortlessly, ripping with power and precision, easily generating speed and flow. More than 25 years later, the board looked great under his feet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur entire San Clemente team immediately asks to take a swing as well. But no. That’s it. Party’s over. It’s put away and that’s that.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut… stashed in a safe place was yet another 1990’s era A.I. Mayhem we had salvaged. Very similar in all design aspects, including needle nose, hyper-extended rocker, and glassed-on fins. Wanting to get Yago involved, we grant him one documented session on said board at similar-sized Lowers. On the lefts, he puts on an effortless show of flawless surfing. One session. That’s it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe combined these clips with others of the local team riding multiple vintage …Lost team boards, built from the late ’80s–mid 2010s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFeatured in the edit\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eUSED\u003c\/em\u003e, we screened it live at a few parties to great applause, but as of Fall 2025, never released the footage publicly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith overwhelming consistency, surfers who saw the clips of the AI board wanted to ride it—or at least have one based off it. It’s taken two years, but we finally got busy and did all the work to painstakingly and accurately re-create the board with exacting detail.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eScanning the original board to the most minute measurements, then cut and shaped using blanks with the same blond timber stringers, glassed-on UltraLight Hex-core fins, and period-specific large-radius leash plugs. The dims are written in fractions and the Posca pen art is realistically re-created as well. Each board is fine-tuned and signed by hand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDesign-wise, the board is narrower, longer, thinner, and has a significant needle-nose “flip-tip” rocker with a noticeable hip and pulled-in squash tail that’s more minimal and radical-looking than anything being made today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut a closer look reveals striking similarities to today’s boards: vee-deck to soft, round forgiving rails; single concave bottom to double concave through the fins and a slight blend of vee out the tail. The centerline and rail-line rockers are modest and smooth throughout the center, which is the secret ingredient for carrying speed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you cut 1 1\/2” off the nose and 1\/2” off the tail, then re-templated, you would end up with a board that is damn close to today’s standards.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor these reasons, we decided to create a size scale so surfers of various sizes can enjoy. We strongly recommend riding this board about 2” longer than you would a typical modern performance shortboard.
