Year after year, competitors around the world request Sub Drivers as a special weapon for the varied and unpredictable surf of the World Qualifying Series, yet just about anyone with even the most modest of skills can still ride this board as a daily driver. Over the course of 2018, we found repeated team success with a new “Hip Swallow” tail, and are now offering them for 2019. Somewhat radical in its design, its most prominent features being the slightly wider than average nose, a noticeably wide hip and tail block and noticeable spiral vee behind the rear fin. The full nose provides stability for landing airs. The wide hip, and tail lock creates a sort of parallel outline for drive. The Swallow tail reduces surface area, adding grip and bite to the wide tail. It works well with hyper extended rail rocker and spiral vee, to allow the SUB DRIVER to be surfed more tight in the pocket, than the traditional squash tail. The wide nose and tail make for a stable platform in small waves and at low speeds. Combined with low overall rocker and full rails, the board can be ridden pretty short. That said, Britt Merrick and Dane Reynolds still felt a few slight refinements would make an already epic board that much better. And it did: The merits of our original NeckBeard’s update (aka NeckBeard 2) were seen in Dane’s surf film “The Electric Acid Surfboard Test.” In our 3.0 tweak to this great design, we updated only the tail by rounding out its signature square block. While the NeckBeard 3 is the exact same shape in every other way, its new tail design makes this skatey, angular turning air board more versatile by providing smoother transitions in the pocket and buttery carves out on the face—not to mention better hold and more confidence in the barrel. A big fan of single concave, Dane asked Britt to take out the vee from the original NeckBeard, creating single throughout. The sweet spot is bigger and less critical, you can surf forward on it easily, it generates great speed down the line, but with great control and the rail still engages well. The rails bury into the water further and allow a tighter turn.  It’s also easier to change direction back to the open face after a little down carve or cut back.  The Too Fish pivots more like a shortboard. The seaside pivots more like an 80’s shortboard.  A little more above the water and you need to wash the speed a bit for it to roll to the rail. All three of these changes give the Sci-Fi 2.0 a high-performance upgrade in the pocket and extended the wave range to 3-8’ surf n a shorter package compared to the OG Sci-Fi. A couple other changes to the Sci-Fi 2.0 that were not as noticeable to me is the wide point shoved forward, and increased depth of Tomo’s Quad Inside Single Concave for greater lift and responsiveness. I found the Original Sci-Fi to be faster down the line in smaller mushy surf due to it having a wider tail with less rocker. If you loved the performance of your OG Sci-Fi, then you will be stoked on the upgrades with the 2.0. It features an almost exaggerated rail line rocker, that creates a deep single concave, between the feet and hyper-extends through the tail, ending in a noticeable Vee, behind the rear fin. Low rocker for speed, concave for lift, curvey rail line for turning and the Vee out the back, which acts like a rear fin, guiding and holding in through turns. A generally wide and skatey performance outline, with full, forgiving nose and a wide point set back, creates hip in the tail that swoops into a moderate swallow.
